One of the greatest benefits of vinyl siding is that it is low-maintenance compared to other materials. But “low maintenance” shouldn’t be mistaken for “no maintenance.” As one of the siding companies serving the Metroplex, Woodbridge Home Exteriors shares a quick guide on how to clean vinyl siding.
Start by making sure that no other areas will be harmed while you clean your siding. Landscaping may need to be trimmed beforehand to avoid scratching yourself and the siding. Cover the tops of the landscaping with tarpaulin to avoid water damage. Make a note of where the house foundations are, as you will need to avoid water from pooling in these areas.
Then, prepare your tools. Your garden hose should let you reach at least two-thirds of the way around the house, if not all the way. A long-handled car cleaning brush is needed and a bucket for your cleaning solution, which will depend on the finish of your siding. Ask your siding contractor for recommendations. Also, have a soft cleaning cloth on hand to wipe water on the window glass, to avoid water stains.
Cleaning the Siding
If you’re using a pressure washer, set it to a wide spray pattern to avoid incurring damage that requires untimely siding repair. Start washing with the bottom half, then work your way up. Spray in the direction of the siding overlap to avoid water running up the gaps.
Most of the siding should be clean at this point. Inspect the siding for areas with stubborn dirt that the washer didn’t remove. This is where you will need the cleaning solution, which you can mix in with the pressure washer or clean it by hand using the long-handled brush. If you see mold and mildew, commercially available removers are available. You can also use a combination of vinegar and water, a cup to a gallon. Leave the solution for about 10 minutes, then scrub. Finally, rinse all the scrubbed areas with the same pattern as before. Let the siding air-dry, step back and admire your newly cleaned siding.
